In the Weeds aims to strengthen New Jersey’s public humanities sector by targeting small and mid-sized organizations—and the people who make them run.

Events in this program will include professional development and skill-building for individuals working on humanities programs, capacity building for organizations, and opportunities for all of us to come together for learning and networking. We will feature organizations and individuals doing humanities work in New Jersey and beyond, and really dig into how they make it happen.

A Community of Practice (COP) is a flexible gathering of individuals united by shared interests and expertise, providing peer-to-peer support, learning, and networking opportunities. COPs may be cultivated around a topic, geographic area, professional practice, or other common concern for humanities practitioners.

In 2024, NJCH will pilot two COPs:

• Community college humanities
• Oral history and story-gathering

Evaluators are responsible for reviewing applications for funding through our Incubation and Action Grant programs.

• Evaluators review applications individually, then meet as a group to discuss proposals and finalize awards.
• Grants Committee members must live and/or work in New Jersey and receive a stipend of $500 for completing an evaluation cycle.

• Please include a resume or bio and a short description of why you are interested in this opportunity. NJCH encourages applications from a broad range of individuals with experience in the humanities, including graduate students, docents, volunteers, and professionals.
• Please note: members of the Grants Committee may still apply for NJCH grants.

We are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2024 Stanley N. Katz Prize for Excellence in Public Humanities. Created to commemorate the Council's 50th anniversary and honor the legacy of scholar and longtime NJCH board member Stan Katz, the prize will recognize a public humanities project from a New Jersey-based organization that demonstrates community engagement and has had a significant impact upon people in the Garden State. SlowArt Productions presents the annual group thematic exhibition, A Show of Heads. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from October 10 - November 2, 2024. Open to all artists working in any media, this exhibition will include all interpretations and portrayals of the Human Head, from the traditional to the abstract and conceptual. All visions of the head, including partial and multiple heads, will be considered. The exhibition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 72" no wider than 120". Sculptural work must fit through a 36" wide entry door. ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital JPG image files. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments by credit card at time of entry using PayPal, or check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions.
