2023 Individual Artist Fellowships

Individual Artist Fellowships are awarded to practicing New Jersey artists through an anonymous, competitive application process to help them pursue their artistic goals.

Mid Atlantic Arts administers the application submission, review, and post-award process on behalf of New Jersey State Council on the Arts through an ongoing partnership. This includes applicant notification, administration of the individual grants, and final reporting.

Application Assistance Webinars

Mid Atlantic Arts, in coordination with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, offers application assistance webinars for prospective Fellowship applicants. Applicants will receive an overview of guideline requirements and step-by-step instructions on how to use the SmartSimple application system.

Registration is required. Individuals that register for a webinar will receive the connection information and instructions via email. To register, please follow the link listed next to your desired Webinar date.

Both webinars cover the same information. A recording of the webinar presentation will be posted below following the June 15th presentation.

Is your organization prepared to take the next step on its DEI journey?
Compass’s DEI Cohorts are designed for nonprofit CEOs/Executive Directors who are committed to moving their organizations forward on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This fall, our cohorts will work with Jeanne J. Holmes, PhD of RiskVersity and other DEI experts to craft implementable DEI plans for their nonprofits.
As a cohort participant, you will explore how your lived experiences shape your perspective as a leader, conduct organizational assessments through a DEI lens, develop DEI priorities and metrics for success, and establish concrete goals that engage staff and board members in your nonprofit’s DEI work.
You'll also benefit from:

• 5 hours of one-on-one guidance/mentorship from a DEI expert
• A supportive peer group of fellow nonprofit CEOs/Executive Directors
• Access to other Compass resources, including our annual Sorkin Summit

Each cohort will meet for ten 90-minute Zoom sessions between August 31, 2022 and January 18, 2023. The $2,500 program fee includes all cohort sessions, one-on-one mentorship, assessment tools, and materials. Learn more about the program and application process HERE. Applications are now due on

Grants for Arts Projects is our principal grants program for organizations based in the United States. Through project-based funding, the program supports public engagement with, and access to, various forms of art across the nation, the creation of art, learning in the arts at all stages of life, and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.

Applicants may request cost share/matching grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. Designated local arts agencies eligible to subgrant may request from $10,000 to $150,000 for subgranting programs in the Local Arts Agencies discipline. A minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount is required.

Submitting an application is a multi-step process:

• Register with Login.gov, SAM and Grants.gov or renew/verify these registrations.
• Part 1: Submit to Grants.gov the “Application for Federal Domestic Assistance/Short Organization Form.” This is a brief form that will collect very basic information about your organization.
• Part 2: Complete the “Grant Application Form (GAF)” and upload items through the NEA’s Applicant Portal. This web form is where you will enter the majority of your application material (e.g., project description, timelines, budget information).

Login.gov, SAM, Grants.gov (Part 1), and the NEA’s Applicant Portal (Part 2) are separate online systems.

We are happy to announce that the fourth phase of funding will open on June 9, 2022. The NJACRF Phase 4 application deadline is July 19, 2022.

NJACRF was created in 2020 by a coalition of funders to ensure the strength and survival of the nonprofit arts, cultural and historical sector statewide during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this round, the Fund will provide General Operating Support grants to eligible nonprofit arts, cultural and historical organizations. Grant guidelines, eligibility criteria, and application requirements can be found on the NJACRF website.

Created in 1993 to further FCA's mission to encourage, sponsor, and promote work of a contemporary, experimental nature, Emergency Grants provide urgent funding for visual and performing artists who:

• Have sudden, unanticipated opportunities to present their work to the public when there is insufficient time to seek other sources of funding
• Incur unexpected or unbudgeted expenses for projects close to completion with committed exhibition or performance dates

Emergency Grants is the only active, multi-disciplinary program that offers immediate assistance of this kind to artists living and working anywhere in the United States, for projects occurring in the U.S. and abroad. Each month FCA receives an average of 95 Emergency Grant applications and makes approximately 12-15 grants. Grants range in amount from $500 to $3,000, and the average grant is now $1,700.

Queer | Art’s Illuminations Grant for early-career Black trans women visual artists supports visual artists who are self-identified Black trans women and trans femmes. Winning artists will receive a $10,000 grant as well as additional professional development resources and further guidance to bolster their creative development in the field.

As a part of their five-year initiative intended to support arts organizations rooted in communities of color as they explore strategies for achieving organizational resilience while retaining their relevance, The Wallace Foundation invites arts service organizations serving and prioritizing such arts organizations to propose research projects that answer important questions related to the arts communities they serve.

Projects should address key issues of importance to the work of the arts service organization while also providing important learnings about the field of arts organizations founded by, with, and for communities of color. Wallace invites arts service organizations to submit a proposal for one of two types of studies:

·    A research planning and implementation grant, which includes a planning period to work with a research partner followed by the subsequent execution of a research project (up to $250,000).

·    A research expansion grant, which proposes to scale up or refine an existing robust research design and implement an expanded research project (up to $500,000).

Art Fluent’s grant cycle is now open to individual artists through an international open call. The Evolution Grant will provide unrestricted funding to an individual artist with recognized artistic excellence in fine art media and a demonstrated commitment to their art.

Teaching artists from the Mid-Atlantic region are invited to apply to be a presenter at the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Teaching Artists Virtual Retreat. This event will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, August 9 and Wednesday, August 10, 2022.

The Main Street Micro Business Loan will offer forgivable working capital loans with a two-percent interest rate and no interest and no payments due for the first year. Eligible micro businesses in New Jersey with 10 or fewer full-time employees and no greater than $1.5 million in annual revenues will be able to apply for financing of up to $50,000. The Micro Business Loan will be available to for-profit, non-profit, and home-based businesses with a business location in New Jersey and that have been in operation for at least six months. Funding will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
