South Jersey Artist Feature: Lizz Sooy
For Pride Month, SJCA highlights Lizz Sooy, a songwriter, vocalist, model, actress, choreographer, and musician based in South Jersey. You can listen to her latest song, Biat (Body is a Temple), on YouTube! Keep an eye out for their upcoming release, Garden of Eden.
Can you tell us about your music?
Sooy: Music has always been my way of expressing myself, especially through lyrics. There’s no specific genre that I write in, I let the song fall into itself. Writing helps me heal, and I hope that it helps others heal as well.
Can you tell us about your latest single, Biat (Body is a Temple)?
Sooy: I wrote Biat when I was in grad school at Berklee as part of my thesis. It is a part of my show that I am writing called Garden of Eden, which explores sexuality through themes of the Bible as well as a reflection of my journey with the Catholic Church. My hopes are that it will help those in the LGBTQ community who have been negatively impacted by religion while allowing others to understand the grief that the community goes through.

How has South Jersey impacted your songwriting practice?
Sooy: I was lucky to have recorded my first 2 albums at CAS Music Productions in Vineland, New Jersey, with Chris Orazi. I had a sold-out release concert at the Riverfront Renaissance Center, and it was amazing to feel all of the love and support. Being back in my hometown and seeing the talent of the youth has encouraged me to work even harder to show the world that Millville is full of artists; they just need a place to shine.
