SJCA Annual Meeting Re-Cap
On Friday, October 18, 2024, South Jersey Cultural Alliance (SJCA) hosted an engaging afternoon at the Riverfront Renaissance Center, bringing together artists, cultural advocates, and community members for a day filled with connection, creativity, and inspiration.
The event opened with a warm musical performance by Millville’s own Lizz Sooy, a local singer and actress whose voice welcomed attendees and set a lively, inviting atmosphere. As guests arrived, they were greeted with a generous spread of hoagies, donuts, cookies, and coffee This local touch, combined with coffee and snacks from nearby businesses, provided the perfect start as attendees mingled, explored the exhibit space, and reconnected with friends and colleagues in the arts community.
Around 1:30 PM, SJCA’s Executive Director, Julie Hain, took the stage to kick off the event. Julie shared opening remarks before inviting Diane Rogers, Executive Director of the Riverfront Renaissance Center, to introduce the gallery and its impact on the local arts scene. Following Diane’s remarks, Camden County Connector Craig Storrod offered a heartfelt message and performed. The Executive Director closed out the meeting highlighting the successes of the organization and our vision for the future.
As part of the meeting’s interactive format, guests were encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas on SJCA’s field-related questions using sticky notes, sparking lively discussions about the future of arts and culture in South Jersey. Conversations flowed as participants reflected on the needs and opportunities for growth within their communities.
The gathering continued with an optional, special workshop led by Michelle Washington Wilson, a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Awardee and esteemed storyteller. Held at Reese’s House just across the street, the storytelling workshop drew a focused group of 10 attendees eager to develop their narrative skills. Michelle guided participants through her unique storytelling process, helping each person craft and refine their own story. By the end of the session, attendees left with newfound clarity, a stronger sense of connection with their peers, and practical tools to share their stories with confidence.
This event was a testament to the strength of South Jersey’s creative community—a day filled with inspiration, collaboration, and the joy of coming together. As we look ahead, SJCA is excited to continue fostering these connections and supporting the vibrant arts culture that defines our region.
