Recognizing Disability Pride Month in South Jersey
July 13th, 2023 ---
July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act that was signed in 1990, prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in America. Therefore, every July Disability Pride Month is celebrated to honor the history, experiences, and achievements of the disability activists and their allies that fought hard to achieve this success.
During this month, we celebrate the individuality of disabled persons by acknowledging the broad and inclusive meaning of disability. Whether it is physical, mental, visible or invisible, Disability Pride Month confronts the many misrepresentations of disability in our society.
Since there are many differences across every individual with disabilities, Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to reflect on the shared identity of disabled persons while acknowledging the many ways that the community continues to take pride in their identity while breaking down systemic barriers and rejecting ableism.
The movement continues to grow and expand the definition of disability and utilizes an intersectional approach to include people with disabilities as it is connected to race, class, gender, and sexuality. Through this approach, many people with disabilities can gain a sense of community and accept and honor themselves and each other.
As an organization dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we have placed special emphasis this month to highlight, support, and promote disabled artists with our South Jersey Artist Feature series to showcase the amazing work South Jersey disabled artists do in the region. We hope you will join us in celebrating and supporting them for all of their work and accomplishments this month and beyond.
