Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts | Collections Climate Resiliency Cohort | The Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA), in partnership with Christopher Cameron of Sustainable Heritage, are introducing as Collections Climate Resiliency Cohort for collecting institutions (any museum, library, archive, historic site, and/or organizations with historic and/or cultural collections available to the public), with generous funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The vast majority of land in both New Jersey and Delaware lies within what geologists call the Atlantic Coastal Plain, which has a heightened vulnerability to storm inundation and sea-level rise. Collecting institutions need to undergo a paradigm shift in their thinking, a monumental task, to begin to approach planning in a way that both increases sustainability efforts to mitigate their own contributions to climate change while also preparing and adapting for projected outcomes in an ever riskier world. The curated cohort of small institutions will commit to this paradigm shift by examining their everyday operations with a lens toward sustainability and climate change. We will provide sites with environmental dataloggers and work with them to collect environmental data including temperature, relative humidity, and dew point for a one-year period. | Apply Here.

New Jersey Historical Commission & The African American History Program | About the New Jersey Black Heritage Trail | The New Jersey Black Heritage Trail was signed into law by Governor Murphy on September 7, 2022. The legislation calls for the New Jersey Historical Commission (NJHC) to establish a Black Heritage Trail “to promote awareness and appreciation of Black history, heritage, and culture” that will “highlight Black heritage sites through historical markers and a trail-like path that connects the stories of Black life and resiliency.” Under this program, the Historical Commission will work in cooperation with other state agencies, such as the Historic Preservation Office, the Division of Travel and Tourism, as well as local governments, owners or operators of Black heritage sites, and others to identify a series of sites. The bill also names the New Jersey Black Cultural and Heritage Initiative Foundation as a principal collaborator, due to its mission which includes broadening, deepening, and diversifying statewide participation in and appreciation for Black arts, history, and culture. | More information available here.

Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts | Cultural Stewardship Succession Planning Initiative | The Cultural Stewardship Succession Planning Initiative is a two-year project of CCAHA, in partnership with Lyrasis, created to actively address the need for leadership development and knowledge transfer in the cultural heritage workforce. Funded by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the initiative will gather data and build professional development resources to support succession planning for cultural stewardship staff and volunteers. As succession planning is a critical instrument in addressing a long-term shift at cultural heritage organizations toward greater diversity, equity, and inclusion, the suite of resources will promote strategies to keep these important concerns at the forefront during times of transition. As service providers to the country’s cultural heritage collecting institutions, CCAHA and Lyrasis have long recognized the need for succession planning, especially in smaller organizations with fewer resources. CCAHA and Lyrasis will utilize a series of small group listening sessions to learn about successful succession planning strategies and pathways that have proven more challenging for institutions in the project’s target group. | Upcoming events and previously recorded webinars can be found here.
